The date the mark was used in commerce refers to the first date in which the mark was used on products or in advertising that crossed state or international boundaries or in some way affected commercial activity that crossed state or international boundaries. For example, this date includes the date in which a logo is placed on a catalog, and that catalog is shipped to several states outside of the state in which you reside. However, this latter date does not include a use of the mark that was entirely within one state. (Hint: If you use the mark on the Internet, that automatically qualifies as being used in interstate commerce.)
